Frequently Asked Questions
-
You may benefit from a patient advocate if you feel overwhelmed, confused, or unsure about what to do next with your healthcare.
You don't have to be facing a major diagnosis to need support. An advocate can be helpful when you are managing several doctors, taking multiple medications, preparing for a medical appointment, recovering from a hospital stay, or helping an aging parent manage their care.
Sometimes you simply need another set of eyes and ears. We can help you organize information, prepare questions, understand your options, and keep track of what needs to happen next.

An independent patient advocate is your partner in navigating healthcare. We work for you—not for a hospital, insurance company, or healthcare system.
Depending on your needs, we can help with medical appointments, communication with healthcare providers, medical records, medications, referrals, specialist searches, care transitions, and other healthcare-related tasks.
We can also help you prepare for important conversations with your healthcare team, understand medical information, and organize the details that can become difficult to manage.
Our goal is not to take over your care. It is to help you understand what is happening, ask good questions, and feel more confident about your next steps.
-
Absolutely. Many families reach out because they are trying to help an aging parent or loved one while also managing work, family, and other responsibilities.
You may live nearby or across the country. You may need help keeping track of appointments, medications, medical information, or care transitions. Or you may simply want someone knowledgeable and trustworthy to be involved when you cannot be there yourself.
With your permission, we can work with you and your loved one to help organize care, communicate with healthcare providers, and make sure important information does not get lost.
-
Yes. When appropriate, we can attend medical appointments with you and serve as a supportive second set of ears.
Before the appointment, we can help you prepare questions and identify the concerns you want to discuss. During the visit, we can take notes, help make sure your questions are addressed, and help you stay focused on what matters most.
Afterward, we can review what was discussed and help organize the next steps.
You remain the decision-maker. Our role is to help you feel prepared, informed, and supported.

Hospitals and healthcare organizations may have patient advocates or patient representatives who provide valuable support within their organization.
An independent patient advocate is different because we work directly for you. We are not employed by your hospital, healthcare system, or insurance company.
That allows us to focus on your individual needs, questions, priorities, and goals. We can also help you navigate care across different providers and healthcare settings rather than being limited to one organization.
-
We do not replace your doctors, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, or other healthcare professionals.
We do not diagnose medical conditions, prescribe medications, or make medical decisions for you. We also do not provide legal or financial advice.
Instead, we help you understand and organize the information you receive from your healthcare team, prepare questions, communicate your concerns, and navigate the many details that come with healthcare.
When a question falls outside our role, we will help you identify the right professional or resource.
-
Independent patient advocacy services are generally not covered by health insurance.
Our clients pay directly for our services. Because we work directly for you, our focus stays on your needs and goals rather than the requirements of an insurance company or healthcare organization.
While advocacy is an out-of-pocket expense, our goal is to provide practical support that can save time, reduce confusion, and help you navigate healthcare more effectively.
-
Every client's needs are different, so we offer flexible support based on the level of help you need.
Ascent Patient Advocates offers services by the hour. After your complimentary 30-minute consultation, we can talk about your situation, what kind of support would be helpful, and the approach that makes the most sense for you.
You do not have to know exactly what you need before you contact us. That is part of what the initial conversation is for.
Healthcare is better with support—and you don't have to figure everything out on your own.
